Frequently Asked Questions

How does text become binary?

Each character is converted to its UTF-8 representation — a sequence of one to four bytes — and each byte is written as eight binary digits. For example, the letter A is 01000001.

Why do some characters take more than 8 bits?

UTF-8 uses one byte for ASCII characters, two bytes for most Latin-script letters and non-Latin alphabets, and three to four bytes for emoji and rare characters. A single emoji can be 24 or 32 binary digits.

What is the difference between binary and hex?

They are two ways to write the same bytes. Each byte is 8 binary digits but only 2 hexadecimal digits, because each hex digit represents exactly 4 bits. Hex is more compact and easier to read for humans.
